LAS VEGAS – Tomorrow, two teachers from Southeast Career and Technical Academy (SECTA) will begin a two week internship shadowing production engineers operating the Fanuc robotics systems at Clearwater Paper.

This partnership was a result of The Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance and Clark County School District’s FutuReady program, which is boosting internships, job shadowing, and mentorship opportunities for local students.

These teachers will learn how to use the Fanuc robotics system in an industrial setting to better prepare their students for the immediate need in the Southern Nevada workforce. The Fanuc robotics system was recently acquired at SECTA, is currently used at Clearwater Paper, and will be used at Faraday Future.

“This partnership will allow for teachers to efficiently teach their students how to operate state-of-the-art manufacturing machinery,” said Jonas Peterson, president and CEO of the LVGEA. “We applaud our magnet schools and Clearwater Paper for equipping future manufacturing leaders with the skills they need to be successful.”

“SECTA’s partnership with Clearwater Paper is an excellent example of how local businesses are helping our students achieve through the FutuReady Program,” said Clark County School District Superintendent Pat Skorkowsky. “This innovative approach to bringing real world skills to the classroom will be highly beneficial for our students.”

“Clearwater Paper has opened their doors in a true business/education partnership where two teachers can study manufacturing from conception to production,” said Kerry Pope, principal of SECTA. “Our goal and theirs is to train our instructors on current industry practices that are relevant and will help develop future skilled employees.”

SECTA recently announced a program that will allow students to earn credentials in manufacturing, and will eventually expand to other schools across the valley.

About FutuReady

In October 2015, The Clark County School District (CCSD) in collaboration with the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance (LVGEA) started the FutuReady Industry Tours, a series of industry-specific tours connecting local industry with Southern Nevada’s future workforce. These 90-minute tours provide industry leaders with an opportunity to connect with our local CCSD Magnet Schools and Career and Technical Academies to learn first-hand how our students are preparing for the workforce and to forge partnerships with the schools.
